Mandatory Requirements for Certification
- Be Not less than 18 years of age.
- Small Vessel Basic Safety Training, (MED A-3). Content to be determined by the group and according to the syllabus.
- Marine First Aid, Basic Certificate or equivalent.
- Sea Service or equivalent as detailed below.

Qualifying Sea Service Qualifying sea service for the Small Vessel Operator Proficiency is satisfied by one of the following three (3) options |

Option A |
Service on small vessels employed in commercial operations. Proof of 8 weeks sea service. Sea service must have been completed on a Transport Canada commercially registered or licensed vessel. Qualifying time is only acceptable if supported by testimonial(s) for the employer(s) including the applicant's name, position and a description of duties on board. |

Option B |
Licensed small commercial fish harvesters. Proof of a valid commercial fish harvester license by a Provincial Authority or by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. |

Option C |
Practical demonstration of Proficiency Completion of the Small Vessel Handling practical demonstration. (Paragraph 9, sec 2) |
